Where to recycle a mattress?

Where to recycle a mattress?

Where to recycle a mattress?

Getting rid of a mattress without access to a vehicle or additional muscle power can be tricky, and a major reason why so many end up fly tipped on streets or going to landfill.

Good news - there is a better and easier way to get rid of your old mattress. How? By recycling it.

But before we get into that, lets start from the top and look first of all, at when you should get rid of your mattress?

All mattresses, no matter how well made, will need to be replaced eventually. Most manufacturers recommend that you should replace your mattress every 8-10 years on average, but this can depend on how often it is used and the occupants.

A mattress in a spare room will probably live longer than one that is slept in every night. Older mattresses can become unhygienic and offer less support, resulting in poorer sleep quality.

Here are some of the signs that you should replace your mattress;

- There is visible damage from damp, mould, or staining from spilled drinks, bed wetting or bodily fluids

- You’re experiencing worse allergies or asthma at night

- There are visible dips, sagging edges, bumps, lumps, or squeaky springs

- You wake up feeling joint or muscular stiffness or discomfort

- Your sleep quality is suffering

So, how can I recycle a mattress?

With 167,000 tonnes of unwanted mattresses ending up in landfill, many of us would prefer a responsible and sustainable end of life for our old mattress.

Taking it to the local tip or using a waste removal service does not guarantee that the mattress will be properly recycled.

In fact, very often, surplus mattresses can be sent overseas for disposal and even fly tipped. In the UK, only 14% of used mattresses are currently sent for ‘real’ recycling.

As the UK’s first sleep brand with B Corp™ certification, Simba is committed to reducing landfill. Our mattress recycling service is designed to refurbish or recycle every Simba mattress we take back.

In our four recycling hubs, we test and inspect all returned mattresses, processing 12,000 mattresses per week. We remove defective parts and use authentic Simba replacements. We cleanse and sanitise the mattress inside and out, so it is as pristine as new.

We reduce waste and prevent landfill - and you can make a huge saving on the original retail price when you purchase our Hybrid® Mattress Refurbished.
