European Queen vs UK King: Size Guide

When looking for a mattress that’s larger than a standard UK double, the two sizes you’ll most commonly find yourself choosing between are the European queen and the UK king. Despite their differences in name, they are closer in size than you might expect. Here is how they both measure in width and length:

UK King

  • Width: 150 cm
  • Length: 200 cm

European Queen

  • Width: 160 cm
  • Length: 200 cm

As you can see, though they both measure 200cm in length, a European queen mattress will provide you with an additional 10cm of width. It might not seem like a lot, but it will make a meaningful difference at night, especially if you’re sharing your bed with a partner.

Finding the Right European Queen Mattress

Sleeping on a mattress that you not only find comfortable but is suitable for your body weight and preferred sleeping position can make a noticeable difference in your overall quality of sleep. To help you make the right choice, there are a couple of factors that you need to consider, including:

Hybrid vs Foam

When you start searching for the right EU queen mattress, the two most common types of mattresses you’ll come across are hybrid and foam. Understanding the difference between them is key to buying a mattress that is designed to benefit you specifically.

Foam mattresses remain one of the most popular options, and it’s easy to see why. They are built entirely from layers of memory foam or latex, which allows them to wrap around your body - a feeling that many people find comfortable. The trade-off is that they retain heat exceptionally well, which isn’t ideal if you tend to sleep warm.

Hybrid mattresses combine the best of both worlds. Every layer of our hybrid EU queen mattresses is jam-packed with our award-winning, patented sleep technology. The result is a comfortable, breathable, responsive, and supportive mattress that’ll provide you with longer, deeper, and more restful sleep night after night.

Firmness Options

Whether you plan on buying a Simba or an Ikea queen mattress, another important consideration is the firmness that you choose. When trying to decide, most people take into account their personal preference for what they find comfortable. While that is important, you should also consider your body weight and your preferred sleeping position.

If you are a heavier individual who likes to sleep on your back, we’d recommend a firmer EU queen mattress, as it’ll provide you with the support your body needs. If you’re a light side sleeper, on the other hand, we’d recommend a soft to medium-firm mattress instead.

  • What is the size of a European queen mattress?

A European queen mattress measures 160cm (W) x 200cm (L). It’s often preferred among couples in the UK who are looking for a slightly wider option than a king-size mattress, but not as wide as a super king.

  • What is the difference between a queen and a Euro queen?

The main difference between a standard queen and a Euro queen mattress is size. Believe it or not, queen mattresses in the UK don’t have a standard width and length. So, the name alone won’t tell you much about the size of the mattress you’re buying.

    Euro queen mattresses, on the other hand, measure 160cm (W) x 200cm (L) or roughly 63” x 79”. They most closely resemble a UK king mattress, which measures 150cm (W) x 200cm (L).

  • Are EU and UK bed sizes the same?

Though UK and EU beds have the same size names, the actual dimensions behind those names are different. To help you get a better idea of how they compare, here is a quick breakdown of all the most common bed sizes across Europe and the UK:

    Single

    • UK: 90cm (W) × 190cm (L)
    • EU: 90cm (W) × 200cm (L)

    Small Double

    • UK: 120cm (W) × 190cm (L)
    • EU: No direct equivalent

    Double

    • UK: 135cm (W) × 190cm (L)
    • EU: 140cm (W) × 200cm (L)

    King

    • UK: 150cm (W) × 200cm (L)
    • EU: No direct equivalent

    Queen

    • UK: No direct equivalent
    • EU: 160cm (W) × 200cm (L)

    Super King

    • UK: 180cm (W) × 200cm (L)
    • EU: No direct equivalent
  • Is a double bed larger than a queen in Europe?

No, a queen bed is larger than a double bed in Europe. Though they are both designed to accommodate a mattress of the same length (200cm), an EU queen bed can fit a European queen-size mattress, which is 20cm wider than a standard EU double mattress.

  • Can I use a European queen mattress on a UK bed frame?

It depends on the size of the bed frame you have, but generally speaking, UK bed frames are not designed to perfectly pair with any EU-sized mattresses. So, if you plan on purchasing an EU queen mattress, for example, you’ll need to buy a bed frame that’s built to accommodate a mattress with European dimensions. In this case, you’d be looking at buying an EU queen bed frame.

  • Does Simba deliver European queen mattresses in a box?

Yes, we do. To make deliveries more convenient both for our delivery drivers and our customers, all our European queen mattresses arrive rolled up in a Simba cardboard box. That way, our delivery team can quickly and easily take your Simba EU queen mattress to the room that you want to use it in.
