This is a stand-alone service and will remove any other products from your cart. If you are also planning to order a Simba mattress the Recycling service can be added as a Delivery option at checkout instead.
If you’re unsure whether to recycle your old mattress, these Worrying Facts will dispel any doubt: Worrying Fact #1 is that, according to the National Bed Federation, only 24% of discarded mattresses were recycled in the UK last year. And Worrying Fact #2 is that the rate of ‘real’ recycling of those mattresses is estimated to be only 14%. And by the way, ‘Real’ recycling means salvaging over 80% of the materials, not just a couple of springs.
So, as much as 76% of the mattresses we discard every year probably end up in landfill. According to our recycling partner those mattresses equate to 167,000 tonnes of waste, the rough equivalent of 14,000 double decker buses; multiply that by 10 for every decade that they don’t biodegrade (which could take up to 100 years) and you’ll see our point.
So what are your options? You could donate your old mattress to charity, if you can find one that will accept it because of safety concerns. You could take it to the tip on the roof of your car, or pay the council to remove it. But unfortunately neither option guarantees ‘real’ recycling, especially since the mattresses must be dry and undamaged for that to happen.
That’s where our recycling service comes in. Because with Simba, you can be 100% certain your mattress will be properly and thoroughly recycled in a high-tech, accredited facility. No hassle, no corners cut, no rip-offs. Just a very professional service.
We’ve worked for many years with our UK based partners; they currently process over 8% of all UK mattresses sent for recycling, so they really know what they’re doing.
With 4 UK recycling hubs and a large team of skilled operatives, they carefully strip down mattresses into their component parts at a rate of 12,000 mattresses per week. All components are sorted and sanitised before a QC check and redistribution: metal springs are sent to scrap metal merchants, textiles are baled and reprocessed (here in the UK) into new fibres, while foam is transformed into carpet underlay, dog beds or even a new type of recycled foam we’re beginning to use in our mattresses.
It’s easy. We’ll collect your mattress on a date of your choosing. we’ll even remove it from the room of your choice; provided you keep it clean and dry, we’ll do the rest.
If you’re planning to buy a new mattress from Simba it’s best to add this service to your order at checkout; that way we can collect your old mattress on the same day as your new mattress is delivered, if you prefer.
But if you just want to recycle an old mattress, simply click the ‘Buy it now’ button and checkout as usual. We’ll automatically allocate you a collection date within 5 days of your order date, and you’ll receive a protective transit bag for your mattress in advance. If for any reason the allocated date is inconvenient, it’s easy to rearrange either by contacting hello@simbasleep.com or through the AO tracking email you’ll receive.
To make sure your mattress is recycled efficiently, we ask you to bear a couple of things in mind:
To make sure you’re in, we’ll let you know your time slot on the day (and we’ll update you if this changes).
We can’t recycle your mattress if it’s wet or damaged, so please don’t leave it outside and use the protective bag we send you.
We can collect your mattress from any room, upstairs or down, but please keep access routes clear (although do use dust sheets if you like)
