Our bedrooms are our safe space. Where we go to switch off and drift off, they’re personal in every sense of the word. At the heart of them? Our beds. The hub of the room, they’re not just there for comfort, they tie together our bedroom style; the right bed will strike the perfect balance for better sleep. If you’re unsure where to start, we’ve pulled together some of the most popular types of beds. So you can fall asleep as easy as A to Zzz.
Before you choose…
You’ll need to decide on your bedroom style. Your bed is the focal point of the room, which means it’ll need to set the tone for everything that surrounds it, like your wall colours, décor and soft furnishings. Certain types of bed frames are more versatile by design, so they’ll work for a variety of bedroom aesthetics. Others – especially those with bold coloured upholstery or statement designs – can help you express your unique style. Here are some factors you may wish to consider before you choose your desired bed type:
- Where your bed is going. Not all beds belong in bedrooms. If you need extra sleep space for guests – but are limited on the number of bedrooms – you might want to purchase a sofa bed to go in your living space. Daybeds are a great idea for guestrooms, and bunk beds for kid’s bedrooms.
- How much space you’re working with. Smaller rooms might benefit from storage-led designs, whereas larger may choose a more luxurious, upholstered option. Storage beds are also great if you have a large family, as they can store more belongings and reduce overall clutter.
- Your aesthetic. Our bedrooms are an extension of who we are, so they usually reflect our personal style. If you prefer a minimalist aesthetic, a wooden bed with clean lines might be your first call. If you’re wanting all-out maximalist, you may prefer sleigh beds or colourful upholstered beds. Classic or modern, loud or subtle – the choice is entirely up to you.
Ottoman beds
Different types of beds offer different types of storage, and it can be overwhelming deciding which is best for your lifestyle. Divan beds are great for easy drawer access, while Ottoman beds promise optimum under-bed storage that’s a little more discreet. To access your storage, simply lift up your bed, and drop to sleep. Since you have a lot more space to play with, you can store anything from clothes to bedding to toys, but whatever you choose, you can expect a clutter-free bedroom that helps you feel calm and collected in time for rest. Want to capitalise on storage? Super King beds are your best bet – and they also promise an extra sumptuous space to sleep on.
Divan bases
Storage beds don’t just come in Ottoman form; some people prefer Divan beds, which usually have pull-out drawer space built into the base. They’re ideal for people with smaller bedrooms or if you’re limited on storage space, and people often use them to store extra bedding – like pillows or Summer duvets. Classic by name, but timeless by nature, go for a Divan bed if you want easy access to storage that doesn’t compromise on style.
Our premium beds come with two or four drawer options, so you can personalise your storage space to suit your lifestyle.
Wooden beds
If you’re set on a minimalist aesthetic, wooden beds are one of the most popular bed styles to go for. While you can get more extravagant options (like sleigh beds), people often go for wooden frames for more simple bedroom styling. They’re made without any upholstery, so the wood can take centre stage. And those like our Ashdown and Sherwood beds are designed with clean lines in a lighter wood, so they can work in any bedroom. Seasonal changes factored in.
Daybeds
Daybeds lead a double life, and we can’t work out which we prefer more: the snug sofa setup, or the nighttime bed arrangement that lends a whole new dimension to sleepovers. Usually, daybeds will have one single mattress housed in a wooden frame, which acts as a sofa during the day. Underneath you’ll find a pull-out drawer with another single mattress, which can be used to sleep an extra person if needed. They’re one of the most versatile kinds of bed; it means you never need to compromise on floor space when guests aren’t staying. And between you and us, they offer the cosiest place to unwind on lazy days.
Futon
When you’re searching for your perfect style, there are two bed names you’ll need to lookout for; futons are also known as sofa beds. If you often have guests to stay, but your usual twin or double bed setup doesn’t cover the numbers, futons are an easy way to offer a comfortable sleep for those staying for a couple of nights. And the best part is, you rarely need to buy a mattress, since the comfort is already built into the design. This does mean futons don’t provide adequate support for more than a few nights, but they’re great for short stays.
Upholstered frames
Covered in dreamy textures, upholstered beds are the perfect pick for creating a cosier bedroom setup. They’re also ideal for adding a more personal touch to your sleep space, since upholstered beds like our premium selection can be tailored to suit you. Whether that’s your headboard design, or the fabric you choose. If you want to take the luxury up a notch, we’d suggest investing in a King Size bed. It’ll give you more space to stretch out, so much so you’ll never want your lie in to end.
While many upholstered frames come without storage for a cleaner aesthetic, you can opt for two or four drawer storage with selected Simba beds if you’re limited on space, as well as easy access Ottoman storage for a masterclass in decluttering.
Sleigh beds
One of the most luxurious bed varieties, the clue is in the name when it comes to sleigh beds. Featuring both a headboard and footboard, they’re ideal if you want to inject a vintage, rustic style to your bedroom. They often come with dark wood finishes, or they’re upholstered with velvety fabrics. Opt for a sleigh bed if your bedroom has a more classic theme, or consider modern takes on the style to lend a regal feel to more contemporary sleep spaces.
Bunk beds
And the award for most the most nostalgic bed goes to the trusty bunk bed. Not only do they add a fun twist to a bedroom, they’re also a great way of maximising on floor space when two kids need to share a room, whether that’s for activities or storage. They’re a step up from your usual single bed. Literally.
One thing you should bear in mind before buying a bunk bed is that not all types of beds work best with standard UK mattresses. That goes especially for bunk beds. When you’re buying a mattress for your bunkbed, you must ensure it meets safety regulations. Standard single mattresses are too deep to meet them, so you’ll need to invest in one like our Kids mattress; although only 16cm deep, it’s still packed with our signature Simba tech – meaning you’ll still get the Simba sleep experience you know and love.
