Do Kids Need a Different Type of Mattress Protector Than Adults?

Kids’ mattresses can go through a lot, from spilled drinks to nighttime accidents. A mattress protector makes it easier to deal with these little mishaps and helps keep the mattress clean for longer.

Children don’t always need a protector designed specifically for them, though. The right choice depends on their age, the size of their bed and whether you need extra protection against spills or a cooler, more comfortable sleep surface.

At Simba, we offer mattress protectors with different materials and features to suit different needs. Here’s what to look for when choosing one for your child.

Do Children Need Special Mattress Protectors?

Older children do not necessarily need a protector specifically marketed for children. A correctly sized adult-style protector may be suitable, provided its materials, fit and features meet their requirements.

The main considerations are waterproofing, breathability, ease of cleaning and compatibility with the mattress.

For example, a school-age child who occasionally experiences nighttime accidents may benefit from a waterproof protector. A child who frequently feels warm during sleep may also benefit from breathable materials.

Babies and younger toddlers require additional consideration because their sleep surfaces must meet age-appropriate safety requirements.

Why Is Waterproof Protection Important for Kids?

Waterproof mattress protectors provide a barrier against liquid reaching the mattress beneath.

This can be particularly useful during toilet training, when nighttime accidents may still occur. Drinks, spills and other everyday incidents can also expose a mattress to moisture.

Without suitable protection, liquid may penetrate the mattress cover and reach materials that are difficult to clean thoroughly.

A removable waterproof protector can reduce this risk while making the sleeping surface easier to maintain.

Our TripleShield Bamboo Mattress Protector and TripleShield Tencel Cool Mattress Protector both offer waterproof protection designed to resist spills and stains.

Should a Kids’ Mattress Protector Be Breathable?

Yes. Breathability is an important consideration when choosing bedding for children, particularly if they tend to become warm during sleep.

Traditional waterproof materials can sometimes restrict airflow, potentially affecting comfort. However, waterproof protection does not necessarily require a heavy or uncomfortable surface.

Our TripleShield protectors are designed to keep liquids out while offering a soft, breathable surface, so you don’t have to choose between practical protection and comfort.

The TripleShield Bamboo Mattress Protector has a silky-smooth surface made from bamboo-derived fibres. It feels soft against the bedding and is designed to allow airflow, helping your child stay comfortable through the night.

The TripleShield Tencel Cool Mattress Protector uses TENCEL™ fibres, which are known for their smooth feel and ability to help manage moisture. This makes it a useful option if your child tends to get warm or you’re looking for a cooler-feeling sleep surface.

Both offer waterproof TripleShield protection, so you can choose the surface that best suits your child’s needs.

Which Simba Mattress Protector Is Suitable for Children?

There are three Simba mattress protectors to choose from, depending on what matters most to you and your child:

TripleShield Bamboo Mattress Protector: Features a soft bamboo-derived surface and certified waterproof protection. Its TripleShield technology helps protect against most accidental spills.

TripleShield Tencel Cool Mattress Protector: Combines waterproof TripleShield protection with breathable Tencel fibres designed to manage moisture and provide a cooler sleeping surface.

Quilted Performance Mattress Protector: Made from breathable cotton, with extra cushioning for a softer, more luxurious feel. It also has a wash-resistant anti-dust mite treatment designed to deter dust mites and help limit their allergy-related effects. The treatment is designed to remain effective through washing and doesn’t use pesticides or chemicals. This protector focuses on comfort and allergy-related protection rather than the certified waterproof protection offered by our TripleShield models.

You can compare the materials, sizes and features across our mattress protector collection.

What About Mattress Protectors for Babies and Toddlers?

Babies have different sleep safety requirements from older children, particularly during their first 12 months.

Loose or incorrectly fitted bedding can create risks in a baby’s sleeping environment. Parents should therefore follow age-appropriate safer sleep guidance rather than assuming a standard mattress protector is suitable.

Our Hybrid® Cot Bed Mattress is specifically designed for children from birth to approximately three years.

Our Hybrid® Cot Bed Mattress is designed for little ones from birth to around three years old. It has a firm side for babies under 12 months and a more cushioned side for toddlers. The water-resistant polypropylene lining helps protect the inside of the mattress from moisture, while the removable outer cover can be machine washed.

The lining also helps prevent liquid from soaking into the mattress and pooling inside it. This means you get built-in protection against everyday little accidents without needing to add an adult-sized waterproof protector. Always follow the mattress instructions and age-appropriate safer sleep guidance.

Does Mattress Protector Size Matter?

Yes. A properly fitted protector should remain secure around the mattress without excessive movement, bunching or loose material.

Our standard mattress protector range includes UK single, small double, double, king and super king sizes, alongside selected European sizes.

The single protector measures 90 x 190cm, while the small double measures 120 x 190cm. Both can be suitable for older children’s beds with corresponding mattress dimensions.

Our protectors accommodate mattresses up to 40cm deep.

These sizes are not intended as substitutes for properly sized cot bedding. Always check the exact mattress dimensions and the protector’s compatibility before purchasing.

How Easy Should a Child’s Mattress Protector Be to Wash?

Ease of washing is especially important when a protector may need frequent cleaning.

A removable protector allows parents to address spills and other incidents without attempting to clean the entire mattress.

Our TripleShield Bamboo and TripleShield Tencel Cool Mattress Protectors can both be machine washed separately on a gentle cycle using mild detergent. They can also be tumble dried on a low heat. Avoid bleach, ironing and dry cleaning.

The Quilted Performance Mattress Protector has different care instructions: wash it at 40°C using non-biological detergent and tumble dry it on a cool setting.

Whichever protector you choose, check its care label before washing. Following the instructions helps you keep it fresh without damaging its materials or protective features.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, provided the child is old enough for that bedding arrangement and the protector fits the mattress correctly. Our single protectors measure 90 x 190cm and accommodate mattresses up to 40cm deep.

Yes. Both our TripleShield Bamboo Mattress Protector and TripleShield Tencel Cool Mattress Protector are certified waterproof under BS EN ISO 20811, the hydrostatic head test for water resistance. They’re tested to a minimum pressure exceeding 1,500mm, demonstrating their resistance to liquid penetration under the test conditions. This helps protect the mattress against most everyday spills and accidents.

Not necessarily. A suitable removable waterproof protector can provide additional liquid protection. Our HybridⓇ Cot Bed Mattress takes a different approach, incorporating an internal water-resistant lining and a washable outer cover.

You can use a mattress protector on a bunk bed, provided it fits the mattress securely and doesn’t interfere with the bed’s safety requirements. The key thing to check is mattress depth: many bunk and cabin beds have a maximum depth of around 16cm, although the exact limit depends on the bed frame.

Simba’s Hybrid® Kids Mattress is 16cm deep and designed for use with suitable bunk and cabin beds. Always check the limit specified by your bed’s manufacturer before choosing a mattress, and make sure any additional bedding doesn’t compromise the safety rails.

There is no fixed age. The decision depends on the child’s individual circumstances, including whether nighttime accidents continue. Some families choose to retain waterproof protection even after accidents become uncommon.
