Mattress Delivery Day: A Room Prep Checklist
Getting your room ready before a mattress or bed delivery takes about half an hour and saves far more than that on the day. Clear the route, measure the tight spots, strip and shift the old bed, and decide where the packaging is going. Do those four things and delivery day becomes a ten minute event rather than an afternoon of furniture Tetris.

A Week Before: Measure the Route
The most common delivery day problem isn't the bedroom, it's the journey to it. A boxed mattress is manageable. A bed frame, a divan base or an expanded mattress being repositioned later is another matter. Walk the route from the front door to the bedroom and measure:
- Door widths, including the front door, hallway doors and the bedroom door
- Hallway pinch points, especially radiators, bannisters and corners
- Stair turns, measuring the diagonal clearance on any landing
- Ceiling height on stairs, which catches people out with longer items
- Lift dimensions if you're in a flat, including the door opening, not just the interior
Compare these against the boxed dimensions on your order confirmation rather than the product dimensions. A rolled mattress arrives far smaller than its final size, which is one of the quiet advantages of vacuum-packed delivery.
Two Days Before: Decide the Old Bed's Fate
An old mattress standing in the hallway is the enemy of a smooth delivery, so sort its destination in advance. Many brands, ourselves at Simba included, offer a mattress recycling service for a small fee: this takes away your old mattress to keep your new delivery smooth. If you've booked that, check whether it happens on the same visit (at Simba, we offer standard delivery and VIP delivery, and each one comes with a different mattress removal procedure). If you're disposing of it yourself, book the council collection or tip run for before delivery day, not after.
If the old mattress is staying in the house - for a guest room, for example - move it before the delivery arrives. You want the bedroom empty of obstacles and the new bed's position clear.
The Night Before: Clear and Clean
Strip the old bed completely and wash what you're keeping. Then clear the floor along the entire delivery route. Shoes, toys, rugs that slip, the laundry basket that lives on the landing. Delivery teams move quickly and carry awkward loads, and anything underfoot slows everyone down.
While the bed area is empty, vacuum where the new bed will sit. It sounds fussy, but you won't see that patch of floor again for years, and dust under a bed base is a gift to allergens. Check the skirting for anything you've been meaning to fix too. This is your one easy chance.
Delivery Morning: The Final Five
- Protect the floors on the route if you're worried about them. Flattened cardboard works well on wooden floors and stairs.
- Prop doors open and lift anything wall-mounted that hangs low along the route, like pictures on the stairs.
- Confine pets to another room. Delivery teams and open front doors are a bad combination for escape artists.
- Have your phone charged with the delivery tracking open, and keep the confirmation email handy in case of questions.
- Know your service level. Standard delivery usually brings items to your room of choice. If you've paid for assembly, ours is the VIP option, the team builds the bed too, so leave them the space to do it.
What About Flats, Shared Buildings and Tricky Access?
Apartment deliveries add a layer of admin worth handling in advance. If your building has a managed entrance, let them know a large delivery is coming and confirm whether the team can access the lift. Book the service lift if one exists, since some buildings restrict furniture to it. Check whether your delivery slot needs a parking suspension or loading bay arrangement on busy streets, because a driver circling for parking is a driver running late. And if your only route is a communal stairwell, walk it beforehand with the boxed dimensions in mind, noting fire doors that self-close at the worst moments. Propping them briefly with a doorstop while the team passes through, then releasing them, keeps everyone moving and the building compliant.
When the Delivery Arrives
Check the packaging before the team leaves. You're looking for tears, crush damage or damp. If anything looks wrong, photograph it and note it with the courier there and then. It takes thirty seconds and protects you completely if there's a problem inside the box.
If your delivery includes a bed frame, resist unboxing everything at once. Open the fittings pack first, check the parts list, and lay components out in the space you cleared. And if it's an upholstered bed, give the fabric a once-over in daylight before assembly. The Bottom Line
A vacuum-packed mattress needs opening promptly, so don't leave it rolled for weeks. Position the box in the bedroom, cut the outer packaging carefully, keep blades away from the fabric, and unroll it on the base. It will expand to sleepable shape within hours.
Fit a mattress protector before the first night. Then break down the packaging. Cardboard flattens for recycling, and the vacuum wrapping usually goes in soft plastics collection, though check locally. Booking that recycling into your normal routine on day one beats a folded box haunting the hallway for a month.
