How Heavy Is a King Size Mattress, and Do You Need Help Carrying It?
A king size mattress usually weighs somewhere between 20kg and 60kg, depending on how deep it is and what it's made of. Our own king size Hybrid® mattresses range from 23kg to 57kg. For anything over about 25kg, we'd recommend two people for carrying, and you can also choose a delivery option that brings the mattress to your room or sets it up on the bed for you. Here are the numbers, along with some practical tips for getting a king size mattress where it needs to go.
What Decides The Weight Of A Mattress
A UK king size mattress measures 150cm wide by 200cm long. Within that footprint, its construction makes a big difference to how substantial it feels to move.
- Depth. Deeper mattresses contain more material. Simba’s king size Hybrid® mattresses range from 20cm deep for the Hybrid® Essential to 34cm for the Hybrid® Ultra.
- Springs. Different Simba mattresses use different spring configurations, including Aerocoil® microsprings and, on some models, additional spring layers.
- Comfort layers. Foam, wool and other cushioning materials also contribute to the overall construction.
Deeper models generally contain more comfort and support technology, but mattress weight itself isn't a measure of quality or how supportive a mattress will feel. The best choice comes down to the construction and comfort features that suit you.
Do You Need Help Carrying It?
For a king size mattress, a second pair of hands is useful regardless of the model. The challenge isn't just weight: a mattress is wide, long and flexible, which can make it difficult for one person to grip and manoeuvre safely through doorways, around corners or up stairs.
Keeping the mattress boxed until it reaches the bedroom makes things considerably easier with Simba’s rolled Hybrid® mattresses. If you'd rather avoid the lifting altogether, you can choose one of Simba’s delivery and setup options instead.
Is a heavier mattress better?
Not necessarily. Different mattress constructions use different combinations of springs, foam, wool and other comfort materials, so weight can vary considerably between models. Simba’s deeper Hybrid® mattresses add extra comfort, cooling and spring technology, but the right mattress for you depends on the feel and features you prefer rather than its weight alone.
Why A Boxed Mattress Makes Life Easier
Our Hybrid® mattresses arrive vacuum-packed and rolled in a box. The weight is the same, and the shape is far easier to handle. A box can be stood on end, walked through a doorway and carried up a staircase that would be a squeeze for a full-size mattress.
The easiest approach is to carry the box to the bedroom before you open it. Once it's beside the bed, take the rolled mattress out, place it on the base, and then cut away the plastic. The mattress will start to expand straight away. It's ready to sleep on in six hours, and it reaches its full shape not long after.
Our Natural Hybrid® mattresses are made with deep layers of wool and are delivered flat, so we recommend delivery to your room of choice for those.
Delivery Options That Do The Lifting For You
If you'd like to skip the carrying altogether, you have some choices at checkout.
- Free standard delivery. Depending on your order, this is either a one-person delivery to your door or a two-person delivery to your room of choice.
- Mattress Setup and Packaging Removal, £10. Our delivery crew will unpack your mattress, install it on your bed, and take all the packaging away to be recycled responsibly. It's available for mattresses on standard delivery.

- Old mattress removal, £50. If you choose "Standard Delivery with Mattress Removal", we'll collect your old mattress when we deliver the new one. The courier will collect it from any room in your home.
Tips For Moving A King Size Mattress Yourself
If you're moving a mattress that's already unpacked, perhaps to a new room or a new house, these steps will help.
- Clear the route first. Move rugs, shoes and furniture out of the way, and prop doors open.
- Measure tight spots. Check the width of doorways, the turn on the stairs and the ceiling height on the landing.
- Use the handles to guide it. Many of our mattresses have handles for ease of movement. Use them to position and steer the mattress.
- Carry it on its side. It's fine to carry a mattress on its side to get it between rooms. Keep the time it spends like that to a minimum, and store it flat.
- Lift with a partner. One person at each end, facing each other, with bent knees and a straight back. Agree who's leading before you start on the stairs.
- Protect it in transit. If it's going in a van, a mattress bag keeps it clean and dry.
Will Your Bed Frame Take The Weight?
A good bed frame is built for a mattress plus the people sleeping on it, so a quality frame in the right size is all you need. If you're choosing a new king size bed at the same time, our frames and mattresses are designed to work together, and when you select a Simba Ottoman bed online you'll be offered suitable mattresses to pair with it.
On a slatted base, check that the slats are no more than 7.5cm apart so the mattress is supported evenly.
FAQs
The box is much more compact than the mattress itself, because the mattress is vacuum-packed and rolled. If access to your home is tight, our Customer Care team can confirm the box dimensions for the model you've chosen.
It's possible with the lighter models, and we'd recommend two people for the Hybrid® Pro, Luxe and Ultra. The setup service is a good alternative if you don't have help on the day.
Once it has expanded, the mattress stays at full size. For a house move, carry it on its side with a helper and protect it with a mattress bag. Store it flat when you arrive, and keep the time it spends on its side to a minimum.
Weight reflects how much is inside a mattress. All our mattresses are designed to feel medium-firm, and the deeper, heavier models add more layers, more springs and more cooling. The Hybrid® Essential is the lightest at 23kg in a king, and the Hybrid® Ultra is the heaviest at 57kg.
