WHY NOT TRY OUR AWARD-WINNING SLEEP TECH?

Refurbished Mattresses: What They Are and Are They Worth Buying?

A refurbished mattress is one that has been returned to the manufacturer, professionally restored and then sold again at a lower price. The restoration is carried out to a set standard, and the mattress comes with its own guarantee. If you'd like premium sleep technology for less, and you like the idea of keeping a good mattress out of landfill, refurbished is well worth a look.

Where Refurbished Mattresses Come From

Most mattress brands that sell online offer a home trial, and ours is one of the longest offered in the UK, at 200 nights. Occasionally, people decide during the trial that a different model would suit them better, and so those mattresses come back to us.

We think a mattress like that deserves a second life. So wherever we can, we refurbish every mattress that comes back to us, and in 2024 alone, we refurbished 11,436 mattresses for resale. Any mattress with too much wear to be refurbished is recycled.

What Happens During Refurbishment

Every mattress in our Simba-certified Refurbished range goes through the same three stages.

1. Test and inspect, inside and out. Every component is checked, including the springs, the foam layers and the cover.

2. Replace. Any part that needs it is swapped for a brand new, authentic Simba part.

3. Deep clean and sanitise. The mattress is cleaned and sanitised to hospital standards.

After that, it goes through a final inspection by our expert renewal team. Only then does it receive its Simba certification and its guarantee.

What You Get With A Refurbished Simba

The mattress itself has the same technology as a new one. A refurbished Hybrid® Pro, for example, has the same Aerocoil® titanium alloy microsprings, the same graphite-infused Simbatex® foam and the same SupportCore™ sprung base.

Here's how buying refurbished compares with buying new:

If a refurbished mattress fails within the guarantee period because of a manufacturing defect, we'll collect it for free and swap it for another refurbished one.

Do note that to keep the guarantee valid, you need to rotate the mattress once a month for the first three months and then every three months. Do not flip it - you risk not only invalidating your warranty but also ruining the interior components that make up the mattress.

How Much Can You Save?

Prices change with availability, so it's best to check the website for today's figures. To give you an idea, these were the starting prices for a single mattress at the time of writing:

 Hybrid®

 £699

 £449

 Hybrid® Pro

 £899

 £599

 Hybrid® Luxe

That's a saving of several hundred pounds on each model, for the same layers and the same feel.

The Environmental Case

A mattress is a large, complex product, and giving one a second life is a very effective way to reduce waste. By refurbishing the mattresses that come back to us during their trial, and by offering a Mattress Recycling Service for mattresses of any brand, we're reducing the number that go to landfill.

It's one of the reasons we're proud to be a certified B Corp. Refurbishment lowers waste, and it also makes our sleep technology more accessible to more people, which we think is a good outcome all round.

Is A Refurbished Mattress Right For You?

Refurbished is a great fit if:

  • You'd like a higher-specification mattress than your budget would stretch to if you bought new
  • You're furnishing a guest room, a first home or a rental
  • Sustainability is important to you
  • You already know you like the feel of a Simba, perhaps because you've slept on one before

You might prefer a brand new Simba mattress if you'd like the full 200 nights to make up your mind, the reassurance of a 10-year guarantee, or a specific size that isn't in the Refurbished range at the moment. New mattresses are also eligible for our community heroes discount for key workers, students and others, which is worth factoring in when you compare prices.

Both routes give you the same medium-firm feel that all our mattresses are designed around, so you can choose based on budget, trial length and availability.

What Else Is In The Refurbished Range?

Mattresses are the biggest part of the range, and they're joined by other products when stock allows. You'll find Hybrid® and Natural Hybrid® mattresses, mattress toppers, mattress protectors, duvets and our award-winning pillows. Duvets, for example, are cleaned, inspected and sanitised by our expert third-party team before they receive the Simba-certified seal of approval.

Because everything in the range depends on what has come back to us, availability varies. We regularly have Single, Small Double, Double, King and Super King mattresses, and if you see the model and size you're after, it's a good idea to order it while it's there.

Yes. Monthly finance prices are shown on our refurbished mattresses. Finance is subject to affordability, age and status, and a minimum spend applies. You'll find the full list of terms and providers on our finance options page.

Look after it exactly as you would a new one. Rotate it regularly, use it on a supportive base and add a mattress protector to keep it fresh. Rotating once a month for the first three months, and then every three months, also keeps your 1-year guarantee valid.
