What's the Difference Between a Duvet Cover Popper, Tie and Zip Fastening?

When choosing a duvet cover, it's easy to focus on the fabric, colour and size while overlooking how it fastens. However, the closure at the bottom of your duvet cover can make a noticeable difference to how easy it is to change your bedding and keep everything securely in place.

Poppers, ties and zips all serve the same basic purpose, but they work differently and offer their own practical advantages. At Simba, we've chosen secure button closures and internal corner ties for our current bedding range, so here's how these features compare with other fastening styles.

What Is a Popper Duvet Cover Fastening?

A popper fastening uses small press-stud closures positioned along the open edge of a duvet cover. Each popper has two corresponding parts that snap together when pressed, securing the opening without requiring buttons or a zip.

Poppers are convenient because they're quick to fasten and release. They're particularly useful if you change your bedding frequently and prefer a closure that doesn't require threading buttons through individual openings.

However, their reliability depends on their construction. Poorly attached poppers can become loose over time, so it's worth checking that they're securely fixed and close firmly.

What Is a Tie Fastening?

Tie fastenings use fabric cords or ribbons to secure an opening, usually by tying them into small knots or bows. They offer a simple closure that doesn't rely on metal or plastic components.

The main advantage is flexibility, as the ties can be adjusted and replaced relatively easily. They can also contribute to a relaxed, decorative appearance, particularly on linen or other textured bedding.

However, ties may take longer to secure and can loosen if they're not fastened properly. It's also important to distinguish external fastening ties from the internal corner ties designed to hold a duvet in position.

What Is a Zip Duvet Cover Fastening?

A zip fastening runs along the open edge of the duvet cover, allowing you to close the entire opening by pulling a slider. This creates a continuous closure rather than relying on several individual fastening points.

Zips can be particularly convenient when you want a quick, neat finish. They're also useful when you prefer a fastening that remains hidden beneath a fabric flap.

However, zip quality matters. A poorly constructed zip may catch on fabric or become difficult to operate, so it's important to choose a well-made closure and avoid forcing the slider.

Which Fastening Is Easiest to Use?

This largely depends on your personal preferences. Poppers can be fastened individually with a simple press, while a zip closes the opening in one continuous movement.

Ties generally require more time because each one must be secured separately. However, some people find them easier to manage than small buttons, particularly when they prefer a fabric-only closure.

If convenience is your priority, consider how frequently you change your bedding and whether you find small fastenings difficult to handle. The easiest option is ultimately the one you can operate comfortably.

Which Fastening Is Most Durable?

Durability depends more on the quality of the fastening than its particular style. Securely attached poppers, strong fabric ties and well-made zips can all provide reliable performance when cared for properly.

The surrounding stitching is equally important. A fastening attached to weak fabric may eventually pull loose, regardless of how well the closure itself is made.

We recommend checking seams and fastening points when choosing a duvet cover. Regular, gentle washing and following the fabric's care instructions can also help preserve the material surrounding the closure.

How Do Simba Duvet Covers Fasten?

Our current duvet cover collection uses button closures rather than poppers or zips. For example, our Cotton Percale duvet cover features a concealed shirt-style button fastening, while our Egyptian Cotton design uses matching concealed buttons for a seamless finish.

We also incorporate four internal corner ties into our duvet covers. These are designed to help secure the duvet inside its cover, reducing unwanted movement and bunching.

This combination provides two different functions: the buttons close the opening, while the corner ties help hold the duvet in position. You can explore our duvet covers and cosy bedding combos to compare the fabrics and finishes we offer.

What's the Purpose of Internal Corner Ties?

Internal corner ties are small fabric attachments positioned inside a duvet cover. They allow you to secure compatible loops or attachment points on the duvet itself, helping prevent the filling from shifting inside the cover.

This is particularly useful with larger duvets, which can be more difficult to keep evenly positioned when changing bedding. Securing the corners before closing the cover can make the process more straightforward.

However, corner ties aren't a replacement for the main fastening. The cover still needs a secure closure along its open edge.

Does the Fastening Affect How You Wash Your Bedding?

It can influence how you prepare your duvet cover for washing. Closing buttons, poppers or zips beforehand can help prevent loose edges from catching on other laundry.

For covers with ties, securing them loosely may reduce tangling during the wash. However, you should always follow the manufacturer's specific instructions rather than assuming every fastening requires identical care.

We recommend following the care information supplied with each of our bedding fabrics. Washing temperature, drying methods and detergent suitability can vary between materials.

FAQs

Some poppers can be replaced using appropriate repair tools, depending on how they're attached. A tailor or clothing repair service may be able to help if the surrounding fabric remains intact.

Not necessarily. They work best when the duvet has compatible attachment points, so check the duvet's construction before relying on them.

Most washable zip covers can be machine washed according to their care label. Closing the zip beforehand may help protect it from catching on other fabrics.

Not always. For example, our Cotton Percale pillowcases use an envelope closure, while the matching duvet cover features concealed buttons.

The fastening has little direct influence on insulation. Your duvet's filling, tog rating and the cover's fabric are much more important when determining how warm your bedding feels.
