Which Bed Frame Is Right for You? Wood vs Metal vs Upholstered
Bed frames get chosen the way sofas do, on how they look in a photograph. That's understandable, and it's also why so many people end up with a bed that creaks, or one that's freezing to lean against, or one they can't get a hoover under.
Each material behaves differently in ways you only discover after living with it. Here's how wood, metal and upholstered frames actually compare, and which suits which household.
Wooden Frames
Solid wood is the traditional benchmark for longevity. It carries weight well, resists the gradual loosening that lighter constructions suffer from, and a well-made hardwood frame will outlast most of the furniture around it. It's also repairable, which matters more than people expect over a decade.
The variation within the category is enormous, though. Solid hardwood is excellent, thick engineered timber and quality plywood perform well, and thin particleboard is where fixings strip and edges crumble. Wood is also the material most prone to creaking, not because the timber fails but because timber moving against timber makes noise, so joint quality is what separates a silent wooden bed from an irritating one. Aesthetically it suits most rooms and ages well, and it's the sensible default if you want a bed to last and be maintainable.
Metal Frames
Metal divides sharply into good and poor. Heavy-gauge steel is extremely durable, holds its shape, and will last decades. Thin tubular steel flexes with every movement, and that flex becomes noise, which is where metal beds get their reputation for squeaking.
Metal's advantages are practical: it's usually the lightest to move, often the cheapest, and slim in profile, which helps in a small room where a bulky frame dominates. It also allows more airflow around and under the bed than a solid base. The downsides are that metal is cold to the touch, so a metal headboard is unpleasant to lean against without pillows, and that bolted metal joints are the most likely of the three to work loose and need periodic re-tightening. Upholstered Frames
Upholstered beds are built on an internal timber structure with padding and fabric over the top, so the fabric you're looking at tells you nothing about the bed's durability. What matters is the frame underneath, which is why it's worth asking what it's made from rather than judging by the covering.
Their real advantages are comfort and acoustics. A padded headboard is genuinely comfortable to sit against for reading, which a wooden or metal one isn't, and the soft mass absorbs sound rather than reflecting it, which helps in a room with hard floors or a shared wall. They also look substantial and soften a room visually. The trade-offs are cleaning, since fabric attracts dust and marks and can't simply be wiped down, and cost, since a well-built upholstered bed isn't cheap. They're also the heaviest to move.
How to Choose Between Them
Work from your circumstances rather than the photographs. If you want maximum longevity and repairability, solid wood. If you move often, need the lightest option, or want the slimmest profile in a small room, metal. If you read in bed, want a quieter room, or want the bed to be the visual anchor of the space, upholstered.
Allergies push you towards wood or metal, since both wipe clean and neither holds dust the way fabric does. Households with young children or pets often prefer wood or metal for the same practical reason, though a removable, washable upholstery cover addresses much of it. Budget tends to run metal, then wood, then upholstered, though quality varies so widely within each that a good metal frame can cost more than a poor wooden one.
What Matters More Than the Material
Whichever material you land on, construction quality determines whether the bed survives, and the same checks apply to all three. Look for joints fixed with metal brackets and substantial bolts rather than glue and staples. Check the slats: thick, resilient slats held in fitted holders rather than thin ones resting on a ledge.
Measure the slat spacing, which should be no more than around 7.6cm, since wider gaps let the mattress sag into them and create permanent dips. Confirm there's a centre rail with legs to the floor on any double or larger. Then sit firmly on the edge and see whether the frame flexes, rocks or makes a noise. Those five checks tell you more about the next ten years than the material does.
Pairing Frame and Mattress
The frame also changes how your mattress feels, which is worth knowing before you decide. Sprung slats flex gently under load and give a softer, more responsive surface, while a platform top or rigid divan doesn't flex and makes the same mattress feel firmer.

Living With Each One
A few practical realities only surface once the bed is in the room. Wooden frames are the easiest to touch up, since a scratch can be waxed or filled and a scuffed leg sanded, which is why old wooden beds still look respectable after years of being knocked by hoovers. Metal frames don't mark easily but chip, and a chip on a painted metal frame is difficult to disguise and can eventually rust in a damp room.
Upholstered frames show wear soonest, particularly on the corners and the base where feet and vacuum cleaners make contact, and pale fabrics show it fastest. Dust is the other consideration, since fabric holds it and needs vacuuming with an upholstery attachment every few weeks to stay fresh.
Then there's assembly and moving. Metal frames are usually quickest to assemble and lightest to carry. Wooden frames are heavier but generally designed to come apart and go back together cleanly. Upholstered frames are the most awkward, often arriving in large rigid sections that are heavy, difficult to get up a staircase and hard to store if you move. If you rent and expect to move every year or two, that difference is worth weighing properly, because a bed you dread dismantling has a way of determining where you live next.
