Why Does My Bed Squeak? Causes and How to Fix It

A squeaking bed is almost never a broken bed. It's two surfaces moving against each other with a fraction of a millimetre of play between them, and that play is nearly always fixable in under an hour with tools you already own.

The trick is working out which two surfaces. Beds squeak in four distinct places, and each has its own fix, so the first job is diagnosis rather than tightening everything in sight and hoping.

Find the Noise Before You Fix Anything

Strip the bed down to the frame. Then press and rock different parts in turn, listening for where the sound comes from: push down on the corners, then the middle of each side rail, then each slat individually, then the headboard, then rock the whole frame gently side to side.

Get someone to help if you can, with one person pressing and the other listening from underneath, because sound travels through a frame and the noise you hear from above is often produced somewhere else entirely. It's worth the ten minutes. Most people skip straight to tightening the obvious bolts, fix nothing, and conclude the whole bed is finished when a single component was at fault.

Cause One: Loose Joints

This is the most common by a distance. Bolts and fixings work loose gradually through ordinary use and any house moves, and once a joint has play in it, every movement produces noise. It usually presents as a creak when you roll over or get in and out.

The fix is straightforward: tighten every fixing on the frame, working around the bed methodically rather than doing the obvious ones. Don't overtighten, particularly into wood, since stripping a thread creates a worse problem. If a bolt spins without gripping, the thread or the timber has already gone, and a slightly longer bolt with a washer usually solves it. Doing this once or twice a year prevents most bed noise from ever starting.

Cause Two: Slats

Slats are the second big culprit, and they make a sharper, more localised noise that moves when you shift position. Either the slats are rubbing against their holders or against the frame, or one has cracked, or one has crept out of position and is sitting on a ledge it wasn't designed for.

Check each slat individually. Reseat any that have shifted, replace any that are cracked, and if slats are rubbing where they sit, a strip of felt pad, cork or even folded fabric between slat and frame silences it immediately. Slats that have worked loose repeatedly can be secured with a slat holder or a small screw, provided that doesn't interfere with how they're meant to flex.

Cause Three: The Mattress or the Base

Sometimes the noise isn't the frame at all. A mattress can rub against the frame's side rails, particularly if it's a slightly tight fit, producing a noise that sounds structural but isn't. Slide the mattress a centimetre and see whether the sound changes.

Older sprung mattresses can also develop internal noise as springs age, which is a different problem and generally means the mattress is nearing the end of its life. Our Hybrid® mattresses use individually pocketed springs, each enclosed in its own fabric pocket, which is one reason they don't develop the metallic twanging that old open-coil mattresses were known for. If the noise is clearly coming from inside the mattress rather than the frame, no amount of tightening will help.

Cause Four: The Floor

The overlooked one. If the floor is uneven, the frame sits with one leg fractionally off the ground and rocks slightly with every movement, which produces a knock or creak that seems to come from the frame itself. Uneven floorboards do the same thing, flexing under the bed's legs.

Test by pushing down on each corner in turn to see if the bed rocks. A folded card, a furniture pad or a proper felt glide under the offending leg usually fixes it entirely. Felt pads under all the legs are worth fitting anyway, since they stop the bed shifting on hard floors and reduce noise transferred into the floor, which your downstairs neighbours will appreciate.

The Order to Work In

Tighten all fixings first, since it's quick and solves the majority of cases. Then check and reseat the slats, adding felt padding wherever timber meets timber. Then check whether the bed rocks on the floor and pad the legs. Then slide the mattress to rule it out.

If the noise persists after all four, look for a cracked component rather than a loose one, particularly in the centre rail and its legs. A hairline crack in a slat or rail produces a creak that no amount of tightening resolves, and replacing that single part is usually cheap and simple.

Preventing It Coming Back

Most bed noise is maintenance rather than misfortune. Re-tighten the fixings every six to twelve months, and always after moving the bed, since transport loosens everything. Keep felt pads between any surfaces that meet timber to timber, and under the legs.

Buying well helps too, because frames with engineered support have far less scope to develop play in the first place. Our bed bases are built for lasting stability - whether that’s the solid platform top of our divans, or the premium zoned slats on our wooden beds. We design our bases to absorb movement quietly, which is what keeps a bed silent over years rather than months.

FAQs

Nearly always a joint with a small amount of play, most often a loose bolt or fixing. Timber or metal moving against itself makes the noise, and the play widens over time. Tightening every fixing on the frame resolves the majority of cases.

Check each slat, reseat any that have shifted and replace any that are cracked. Where slats rub against the frame or their holders, place felt pads, cork or folded fabric between the two surfaces, which silences the contact point immediately.

It can. A mattress rubbing against the side rails produces a noise that sounds structural, so slide it a centimetre and see if the sound changes. Older open-coil mattresses can also develop internal spring noise, which usually means the mattress is near the end of its life.

If one leg sits fractionally off the ground, the frame rocks slightly with every movement and knocks or creaks. Push down on each corner to test it, then pad the offending leg with a felt glide or furniture pad. Pads under all legs also reduce noise into the floor.

Every six to twelve months, and always after moving house or repositioning the bed, since transport loosens fixings. This one habit prevents most bed noise, because nearly every squeak starts as a slightly loose bolt long before it becomes anything worse.
