Mattress Trials Explained: How a Mattress Trial Works and How to Use It (2026 Guide)

A mattress trial lets you sleep on a new mattress at home for a set period, usually between 100 and 200 nights, and return it for a refund if it doesn't suit you. It exists because no amount of showroom testing tells you how a mattress performs across real nights of sleep, nor does the typical 30-day returns period from online-only stores. Your body needs more than a few weeks to adjust to a new surface, and a trial gives you that time without the financial risk.

Here's how trials actually work in 2026, what the small print typically says, and how to use yours properly rather than letting it quietly expire.

How Does a Mattress Trial Actually Work?

The mechanics are straightforward: you order the mattress, it arrives, and the trial clock starts, usually from the delivery date rather than the order date. You sleep on it as normal. If you decide within the trial window that it isn't right, you contact the retailer, they arrange a collection, and you receive a refund.

At Simba, our trial runs for 200 nights with free returns if you’re not happy. We chose that length deliberately: most people know within three months whether a mattress works for them, but sleep changes with the seasons, and 200 nights can cover you through a summer heatwave and a winter cold snap alike.

A few things vary between brands, so check the terms before you buy. Some retailers charge collection fees. Some exclude certain products, such as bespoke sizes or refurbished stock. Some require you to keep the mattress for a minimum period before returning it, often 30 nights, which we'll come to next.

Why Do Some Trials Have a Minimum Sleep Period?

It sounds counterintuitive, but a minimum period protects you as much as the retailer. A new mattress feels different from your old one by definition, and your body can interpret different as wrong for the first few weeks. Muscles and joints that adapted to a sagging surface need time to settle into proper alignment.

Sleep researchers generally agree that adjustment takes around three to four weeks. Return a mattress on night five and you're judging the unfamiliarity, not the mattress. That's why minimum periods exist, and it's why we'd suggest giving any new mattress at least a month even if your trial doesn't require it.

How Should You Use a Trial Properly?

Most people passively let the trial run without ever really assessing the mattress. That wastes the whole point. Here's a better approach:

  • Note your baseline first. Before the new mattress arrives, jot down how you're sleeping now. Morning stiffness, night waking, temperature. You need something to compare against.
  • Give it 30 nights before judging. Expect the first fortnight to feel odd. That's adaptation, not a verdict.
  • Check in at set points. Around night 30, night 60 and night 90, ask yourself the same questions. Are you waking less? Is the stiffness gone? Are you sleeping cooler or hotter?
  • Test it in different conditions. Warm nights, cold nights, nights after exercise, nights when you're run down. A good mattress performs across all of them.
  • Use a mattress protector from night one. Most trials require the mattress to come back clean and undamaged. A protector keeps your refund rights intact.

What Happens to Returned Mattresses?

A fair question, and one worth asking any brand you buy from. Returned mattresses can't simply go back on sale as new. At Simba, returned mattresses go through our certified refurbishment programme with a trusted third party, which keeps them out of landfill and gives them a second life at a lower price. It's part of why we're comfortable offering a long trial: a return isn't a loss, it's a redirect.

What Doesn't a Trial Cover?

Trials cover suitability, not damage. If the mattress is stained, torn or misused, the retailer can refuse the return or deduct from the refund. Trials also don't extend the way guarantees do. Once the window closes, it closes, so put a reminder in your phone for two weeks before your trial ends. That gives you time for a final honest assessment while you still have options.

It's also worth knowing that trials usually apply per product, not per household order. If you buy a mattress and a bed together, each may carry its own trial terms. Ours do: our full range of beds comes with its own 200 night trial, so the frame gets the same real-world testing as the mattress on top of it.

Is a Longer Trial Always Better?

Longer is generally better, but only up to the point where you'd actually use it. A 365 night trial sounds generous, yet almost nobody changes their verdict between night 200 and night 365. What matters more is what sits alongside the trial: free collection, a straightforward returns process, and a company that doesn't make you jump through hoops to claim what you were promised.

Read reviews of the returns experience specifically, not just the mattress. A trial is only as good as the brand's willingness to honour it without friction.

FAQs

Reputable brands do, provided the mattress comes back in good condition within the trial window. Check whether collection is free, whether any delivery charges are excluded from the refund, and whether a minimum sleep period applies before you can return.

Almost always the delivery date, since you can't trial a mattress you don't have yet. Confirm this in the terms, especially if there's a gap between ordering and delivery, as with made to order items.

Yes, that's the entire point of a trial. Unlike standard returns law, which often excludes opened bedding for hygiene reasons, a sleep trial explicitly allows you to use the mattress. You'll just need to keep it clean and undamaged, which is why we recommend fitting a protector immediately.

Usually not. Mattresses arrive vacuum-packed and can't be re-rolled at home, so collection teams generally take them as they are. Check your retailer's terms for anything specific, but the box isn't something you need to store for months on the off chance.

A trial covers whether the mattress suits you and runs for a fixed period after delivery. A guarantee covers manufacturing defects, such as premature sagging or spring failure, and runs for years, ten in our case. You can return within a trial because you simply don't like the feel. A guarantee claim needs an actual fault.
