True soundproofing means building mass into walls, and unless you own the property and have a budget for construction work, it isn't happening. What you can do is reduce how much noise reaches you and how much it bothers you once it does, and that combination gets most people to a workable night.
Noise disturbs sleep even when it doesn't wake you fully, lightening it and fragmenting it in ways you feel the next day rather than remember in the morning. So it's worth taking seriously, starting with the cheap interventions.
Understand What You're Fighting
Sound arrives two ways, and they need different answers. Airborne noise travels through the air and through gaps: voices, televisions, traffic, dogs. It gets in wherever air gets in, which means gaps around doors, windows, letterboxes and vents.
Impact noise travels through the building's structure: footsteps above, doors slamming, furniture dragged across a floor. Windows are next. Old single glazing is poor at blocking sound, and gaps around the frame make it worse. Sealing those gaps helps, and if you're replacing windows, note that acoustic performance improves with thicker glass and wider cavities rather than simply having two panes. Secondary glazing, a second internal window, outperforms most double glazing for sound because of the larger air gap, and it's a realistic option for renters in some cases.
Add Soft Mass to the Room
Hard, empty rooms reflect sound and make everything louder and sharper. Soft furnishings absorb it, and this is the intervention people underestimate most, partly because it doesn't look like soundproofing.
Heavy curtains over the window do real work, particularly floor-length interlined ones, and they help with light and heat at the same time. A rug or carpet on a hard floor absorbs reflected sound and reduces impact noise for anyone below you. Upholstered furniture absorbs more than hard furniture, which is one practical argument for an upholstered bed frame with a padded headboard, especially if your bed sits against a shared wall. Rearrange the Room

A large wardrobe, a full bookcase or a chest of drawers against the shared wall adds material for sound to pass through, and a bookcase packed with books is a surprisingly effective absorber. It won't match proper acoustic treatment, but it costs nothing if you already own the furniture.
When You Can't Block It, Mask It
Some noise gets through whatever you do, and at that point masking beats blocking. Steady, consistent sound, a fan, a white noise machine, an air purifier, reduces the contrast between background quiet and sudden noises, and it's contrast that wakes people. A door slamming into silence is jarring; the same door against steady background sound is much less so.
Earplugs are the other option and they work well, though they take some getting used to. Foam ones are cheap and effective, and wax or moulded ones suit people who find foam uncomfortable. If you're worried about not hearing an alarm, most people find they still do, though it's worth testing at a weekend rather than before an early start.

Work in order of cost. Seal the door and window gaps, move the bed, add heavy curtains and a rug, put a full bookcase against the shared wall, then try masking sound or earplugs. That sequence solves a large share of noise complaints for very little outlay.
Beyond that, you're into secondary glazing, acoustic panels or building work, which is worth it for a permanent home with a persistent problem and rarely worth it otherwise.
