Heavy curtains reduce heat loss through the glass in winter and soften outside noise, which matters if you're on a busy road.
They're also more forgiving. There's no precise fitting involved, they're easier to change, and they cost less to get to a decent standard. The weakness is light leakage. Light escapes above the pole, down the sides, and through the gap between the two panels, which is why so many people buy blackout curtains and find the room is merely dim. Fixable, but only if you know how to fix it.
The Answer Most People Need
For genuine darkness, use both. A blackout blind handles the glass, and blackout curtains over the top cover the edges, the top and the sides where the blind leaks. It sounds excessive until you've slept in a properly dark room in June, at which point it stops sounding excessive.
If you're choosing one, choose based on your problem. Early summer sunrises and shift work call for a blind with side channels, because that's the only route to real darkness. Streetlight, a noisy road or a cold room point towards curtains, since you get insulation and sound damping alongside the light reduction.
Getting Either One Right
Most blackout disappointment comes down to fitting rather than fabric. For curtains, mount the pole or track well above the window, extend it at least 15cm beyond each side, and use curtains long enough to reach the floor. A pelmet or a ceiling-mounted track closes off the light spill above the pole, which is the single biggest leak.
For blinds, measure carefully and choose a recess fit with side channels if the darkness genuinely matters to you.
