What’s the Best Mattress for an Occasional-Use Guest Room?
The best mattress for a guest room is one that suits almost anyone, feels fresh even after weeks of sitting unused, and gives your visitors a properly comfortable night without costing as much as the mattress you sleep on every day. A medium-firm hybrid is the most reliable choice, because it works for side, back and front sleepers alike. Below, we'll explain what to prioritise, which Simba mattress we'd suggest, and how to finish the room so your guests sleep as well as you do.
What Makes A Guest Mattress Different
Your own mattress is chosen around you. A guest mattress has to work for your parents one weekend, a friend the next month and a teenager at Christmas. That changes the brief in three ways.
- It needs to suit every sleeper. You won't know how each guest sleeps, so you're looking for a balanced feel that most people find comfortable.
- It's used a handful of times a year. A guest mattress will see far fewer nights than your own, so it makes sense to set a sensible budget and put the rest towards bedding that makes the room feel welcoming.
- It spends a lot of time unoccupied. Spare rooms are often kept cooler and aired less often, so breathable materials and a washable cover are a real advantage.
Why Medium-Firm Is The Safest Choice
Studies have shown that a medium-firm feel offers the best sleep quality and support, which is why we design all our mattresses around it. For a guest room, it's the ideal middle ground. A side sleeper gets cushioning at the shoulder and hip, a back sleeper gets support through the lower back, and someone who changes position all night won't feel stuck.
A hybrid design adds to that versatility. Springs give responsive support and let air circulate, and a foam comfort layer adds a cradled feel on top.
The Simba Mattress We'd Suggest
For a room that's used a few times a year, the Hybrid® Essential is a lovely fit. It's our most wallet-friendly mattress, and it's built with the same core technology as the rest of the range:
- up to 1,000 Aerocoil® titanium alloy microsprings, which respond individually to each sleeper
- a graphite-infused Simbatex® foam comfort layer, which gives all the comfort of memory foam without the heat
- five support zones
- a breathable cover that zips off for washing
- a zoned CertiPUR® foam base
At 20cm deep, the Essential is also slim and light. A double weighs 21kg and a king weighs 23kg, so it's easy to rotate and easy to move if the spare room doubles as an office. The slimmer profile means it fits bunk beds and cabin beds as well, which is useful if your guest room is really the children's sleepover room.
When To Step Up A Model
If your guest room is used more often, it's worth considering a deeper mattress. Perhaps a relative stays for a week at a time, or one of you moves into the spare room when the other has an early start. In that case, the original Hybrid® gives you five layers, a 25cm depth and nine support zones. If the room regularly hosts couples, the Hybrid® Pro adds a second layer of microsprings, a breathable British wool layer and a SupportCore™ sprung base with firm edge-to-edge support.
Every mattress in the range has the same medium-firm feel, so you're choosing how much depth and cooling you'd like to give your guests.
A Refurbished Mattress Is Worth Considering
A guest room is a perfect home for a mattress from our Simba-certified Refurbished range. Each one is inspected inside and out, fitted with brand new Simba parts where needed, and deep cleaned and sanitised to hospital standards. You get the same sleep technology at a lower price, with a 30-night trial and a 1-year guarantee. Sizes depend on what's in stock, so have a look and see what's available.
Choosing The Right Size
A double is the most flexible size for a guest room. It's comfortable for one person and works for a couple, and it fits most UK bedrooms. If the room is small, a small double (120 x 190cm) gives a single guest plenty of space and leaves you more floor area. If you have the room for it, a king (150 x 200cm) gives couples and taller guests extra width and length.
Measure the room with the door open, and remember to leave space for a suitcase.
Finishing The Guest Bed
The mattress is the foundation, and the layers on top are what your guests will notice first.
- A duvet for every season. Guests arrive in August and in January, and they all have different ideas about warmth. Our Hybrid™ 3-in-1 duvet for all seasons is made of two duvets, a 3.5 tog and a 7 tog, that snap together to make 10.5 tog. You can put the right one on the bed for the time of year and keep the other folded at the end of the bed in case your guest would like it.
- A choice of pillows. Put two pillows on each side if you can. An adjustable pillow is ideal, because your guest can change the height to suit them.
- A mattress protector. This is the single most useful extra in a guest room. A waterproof protector keeps the mattress spotless between visits, and it goes straight in the washing machine.
- Fresh, breathable bedding. Cotton bedding feels crisp and welcoming, and it washes well between guests.
Looking After A Mattress That Isn't Used Much
A guest mattress needs very little attention. Rotate it once a month for the first three months and then every three months, exactly as you would your own. Air the room now and then, and strip the bed between visits so the mattress can breathe. If you keep it on a slatted base, check that the slats are no more than 7.5cm apart.
