What is an Ottoman Bed?

An Ottoman bed is a type of bed frame that features a hidden storage compartment beneath the base of the mattress.

Unlike a standard bed base, which is typically fixed in place, the base of an Ottoman bed is designed to lift up with the help of a gas-powered mechanism. Once the base of the bed is lifted, it will reveal a large and easily accessible storage space where you can keep bedding, clothing, and any other items that you’d like to store out of sight.

This makes Ottoman beds one of the most practical and space-efficient options available, as they make full use of the area beneath the mattress that would have otherwise gone unused.

How to Choose the Right Ottoman Bed for You

To choose the right Ottoman bed for you and your space, there are a couple of factors that you need to take into consideration. They include:

Bed Frame Size

The very first thing you need to decide is the Ottoman bed frame size that you want (and can comfortably fit within your bedroom). At Simba, our Ottoman beds are available in several different sizes, including Single, Double, King, and Super King.

So, measure the space where you want your Ottoman bed to go in the room, and determine the maximum bed size your bedroom can comfortably accommodate.

Keep in mind that you’ll also need to factor in enough clearance around the bed to move freely. Depending on the lifting mechanism of your Ottoman bed, there should also be enough space on either the side or the foot end of the bed to lift the base and access the storage underneath.

Material & Style

The material your Ottoman bed is made from, and the style you choose, will have a direct impact on both how the bed looks in your bedroom and how it holds up over time. We always recommend choosing a bed that is made of high-quality materials (as it will naturally last longer) and in a design that matches the interior of your bedroom.

At Simba, our Ottoman beds are available in a range of upholstered finishes and colours, including Cream, Grey, Brown, Beige, Blue, and Green. As far as materials are concerned, all our beds are built to last using FSC-certified wood and premium quality upholstered fabric that will stand the test of time.

Mattress Compatibility

Pairing your Ottoman bed with a suitable mattress is essential for both your comfort and the longevity of the lifting mechanism. The mattress you choose should be the correct size for your bed frame and should not exceed the manufacturer's recommended weight limit, as an overly heavy mattress can place unnecessary strain on the gas-powered mechanism.

To help you choose the right mattress for your Ottoman bed, once you have chosen the model that you want to go with, you’ll be given the option to pair it with one of our award-winning mattresses.

Type of Lifting Mechanism

Ottoman beds are available in two different lifting mechanisms. They include side lift and end lift. The one you should choose will depend on the layout of your bedroom and how much clear space you have on either the sides or at the foot end of the bed.

If your bed is positioned with limited access at the foot end, a side lift will likely be the more practical choice. If there is hardly any space on the sides of your bed, but there is plenty of room at the foot end, an end lift will work better for you.

Why Buy an Ottoman Bed From Simba?

At Simba, we offer a 200-night trial on every Ottoman bed in our collection. This allows you to try a Simba Ottoman bed of your choice completely risk-free. To give you extra peace of mind, all our Ottoman beds also come with an industry-leading 10-year guarantee. In addition to the above, other reasons why you should buy an Ottoman bed from us include:

  • Our Ottoman beds are available in different sizes, colours, and designs
  • All our Ottoman beds are customisable to suit your specific needs and requirements
  • We will deliver your Ottoman bed right to your doorstep for free
  • We offer flexible finance options that you can take advantage of
  • Our delivery team can assemble your Ottoman bed for you (for a small fee)

  • How much storage do you get in an ottoman bed?

The amount of storage that you’ll get with an Ottoman bed will depend on the size of the bed you choose. For example, an Ottoman king size bed will offer more storage space than a single or even a double Ottoman bed.

At Simba, we have Single, Double, King, and Super King Ottoman beds. Below is an exact measurement of the storage compartment for each of our Ottoman bed sizes:

    • Single: 22cm (H) x 88cm (W) x 186cm (L)
    • Double: 22cm (H) x 133cm (W) x 186cm (L)
    • King: 22cm (H) x 148cm (W) x 192cm (L)
    • Super King: 22cm (H) x 178cm (W) x 192cm (L)
  • What is the difference between an Ottoman and a Divan bed?

While both Ottoman and Divan beds offer built-in storage beneath the base of the mattress, the difference between the two is the way in which that storage is accessed.

With an Ottoman storage bed, you need to lift the entire base of the mattress. A Divan bed, on the other hand, typically features drawers that are built into the sides of the base, which can be pulled out individually.

  • What sizes do ottoman beds come in?

Ottoman beds are available in a range of sizes. At Simba, we have a large selection of Single, Double, King, and Super King Ottoman beds that you can choose from.

  • Can I use any mattress with an ottoman bed?

The mattress you choose for your Ottoman bed needs to be the correct size for the bed frame you have chosen. For example, if you’re buying a single Ottoman bed, you need to pair it with a single mattress.

To make the pairing process smoother and help you choose a mattress that will fit your Simba Ottoman bed perfectly, once you have selected the Ottoman bed that you want to go with, you’ll be recommended several of our award-winning mattresses that you can choose from.

  • How do I assemble an ottoman bed?

The exact assembly process will depend on the specific model that you choose. Regardless of which Simba Ottoman bed you decide to buy, you will find a full set of assembly instructions included with your order.

If you don’t want to assemble the bed yourself, our delivery team can handle the installation for you, for a small fee.
