A double fitted sheet measures 135cm x 190cm, making it the perfect size for small double and double mattresses.
A soft double fitted sheet is perfect for anywhere you use a double bed - one of the most popular sizes for master bedrooms and guest rooms alike. Although it's also a good idea to use a mattress protector, which will have a waterproof layer to prevent spills from ruining your mattress, a double fitted sheet also provides a layer of smooth softness and can co-ordinate with the bedsheets.
There are two types of bed sheet that are used as the base layer of your bedding. The old-school type is the flat sheet, which is now used mostly for sleeping under (if you're not the duvet type). A double fitted sheet has corners sewn in and an elasticated edge. This is to secure it safely around the mattress so it doesn't buckle or shift during the night, causing uncomfortable lumps. As double beds are often used by couples and families, a snug fit that holds its own against wriggly sleepers can only help keep things cosy at night!
You'll want your double fitted sheet to be breathable, durable and fit your mattress properly. So it's good to look for fabrics such as cotton, which is naturally breathable and hypoallergenic, with a soft weave or finish. You'll also want some stretch from something like elastane, which means that no matter how thick your mattress is you can be sure the corners won't untuck themselves. You can also look for extra fabric treatments that add a touch of luxury. Everyone loves fresh, crisp bedsheets, so looking for quality threads and a weave that suits the purpose is far more important than thread count.
When you look for a quality double fitted sheet you'll often be told to think about then thread count. However, the quality of the final product actually depends on so much more, from the yarn quality to the weave. What thread count technically means is the number of threads woven into each square inch of the fabric, counted both lengthwise (the warp) and across the width (the weft). To make things more confusing, some manufacturers will use the ply - the number of threads twisted together to make one piece of yarn - to inflate the thread count number. This also doesn't take into account the staple, which is the length of the yarn. Plus the weave, construction and the finishing proceses carried out on the finished product all play their part. Essentially, you'll know a quality double fitted sheet when you feel it.
