Why Choose a Wooden Bed Frame?
Wooden bed frames are a popular choice among sleepers in the UK for many different reasons.
If you’re still undecided and considering buying one, here are a few reasons why you should:
Durability & Longevity
Wooden bed frames, especially those made from hardwoods such as ash and oak, are exceptionally durable and capable of withstanding years of daily use. Unlike bed frames made from MDF or other engineered materials, a solid hardwood frame can stand the test of time without warping, weakening, or losing its structural integrity. It’s a worthwhile investment for people who want to buy a quality bed frame that doesn’t need to be replaced every couple of years.
Style & Versatility
Despite their streamlined design, wooden bed frames are remarkably versatile. Whether you’re trying to achieve a warmer and more traditional feel in your bedroom or are after a clean and contemporary look, a quality wooden bed frame can work beautifully either way.
Sustainability
Unlike upholstered and other types of popular bed frames, wooden bed frames are made from far fewer materials. When made from responsibly sourced timber, they become one of the most environmentally conscious choices you can make. At Simba, every solid wood bed frame in our collection is crafted from UKTR-certified Ash wood, so you can shop with confidence knowing that your bed has been sourced and produced with sustainability in mind.
How to Choose the Right Wooden Bed
Not all wooden beds are made the same. To help you choose the right wooden bed, make sure that you take the following factors into consideration:
Room Size & Layout
One of the first and arguably most important factors you need to take into account is the overall size of your room and how your furniture is laid out within it. No matter how much you love a particular wood bed frame, if it doesn’t fit your space comfortably, it’s simply not going to be an option that you can go for. So, measure your room carefully before you start browsing. It'll make finding the right size wooden bed frame much easier.
Wood Type & Finish
The type of wood your bed is made from and the finish applied to it will have a significant impact on both the look of the frame and how it holds up over time. Solid hardwoods like ash are the gold standard for wooden beds, which is exactly what we’ve used for all our wooden bed frames here at Simba. As a result, they are sturdy, strong, and durable.
Mattress Compatibility
If you already have a mattress and are only looking to upgrade your bed, you need to make sure the wooden bed frame you’re interested in is compatible with your current mattress. In other words, if you’re currently using a king-size mattress, you should only be looking into king-size wooden beds (unless you’re happy to upgrade your mattress as well).
Caring for Your Wooden Bed Frame
Whether you buy an ash, walnut, or an oak bed frame, you’ll need to give it a little care and attention every now and then to keep it looking its best. The good news is that wooden bed frames are generally very low maintenance, and ours are no exception.
For day-to-day upkeep, all you’ll need is a clean, dry cloth to prevent any surface-level marks from forming and dust from accumulating. If you notice a stubborn mark that you can’t get rid of using your dry cloth, a lightly dampened one will do the job - just make sure you dry the area off thoroughly afterwards to prevent moisture from settling into the wood.
Beyond regular maintenance, if possible, try and position your bed in your room so that it’s away from direct sunlight and ideally, away from heat sources like radiators. Over time, direct sunlight can cause the finish to fade while the excessive heat exposure can dry out the wood and cause it to warp.
