After the last mince pie has been washed down with a glug of syrupy spirits you never seem to touch at any other time of year, it’s usually time to take a long hard look at your goals for the next twelve months. And if it’s tempting to stop thinking about it and go back to bed, well… maybe that’s exactly what you should do.

1. Sleep speaks your body’s language

Not only will getting some quality rest help you feel more energised and focussed, but studies of athletes have shown that consistent good sleep can help improve performance. From reaction times to injury prevention and recovery, the best warm up for physical activity is a chilled out night, every night.
2. You can sleep your way to the top
A 2016 study by non-profit RAND Europe found sleep deprivation could be costing the UK economy a whopping £40 billion a year in sick days and lost productivity. If you want to spend less time feeling sorry for yourself on the sofa and more time climbing the career ladder, a great place to start is making sure you put in the hours in the bedroom as well as the boardroom. For most of us, the ideal sleep opportunity is between seven and nine hours a night - plus it doesn’t hurt to find out your chronotype, and try and work around it.
3. Sleep makes relationships stronger
Whether your goal is a new romance or revamping an existing relationship, you could easily be undermined by lack of sleep. Consistently getting too few hours can really cause a breakdown in communication, from misreading - and affecting - each other’s moods to winding each other up with impulsive, unhelpful behaviour.
4. Nothing tastes as good as sleep feels
One of the most common resolutions is to pack your diet with good stuff. If you’re aiming to ease off indulgences after outrageously delicious Christmas excess, it’ll be a lot easier to stick to your guns when you’re not tired. Sweets are great treats, but reaching for a sugar rush every afternoon just to stay on the ball? Not so much.
